‘The Cloisters’ is a modern extension to the ancient Church of St Mary’s in Stansted, Kent. Completed in October 2015 it has a hall that can seat up to 50, a small kitchenette and two much needed toilets! Each year more than 2,000 people attend weddings at St Mary’s around and up to 1,800 people visit for christenings. Our popular services at Easter, Harvest, Remembrance and Christmas as well as our regular Sunday worship congregations and midweek groups are also well attended.
The total cost of the project was £433,000. Thankfully the parish has received support from individuals and charitable grants which has helped boost our successful fund-raising events. However we still have a loan of £35,000 to pay off. Besides from the wonderful generosity of those involved, the fundraising events have brought people together in a special way, encouraging them to become part of our caring community – and we have had a great deal of fun! Do look at our website for forthcoming events.
The Cloisters now provides the church with a comfortable (and warm!) meeting/family room, toilets, small kitchenette facilities and much needed access for the disabled so we now have the opportunity to run children’s groups alongside the main Sunday services, a venue for wedding, confirmation and baptism classes and a weekly coffee morning open to all. The new facilities have enabled us to enhance the social facilities currently available in our parish….. So do come and join us each Thursday morning 10am-12 noon for coffee, cake and chat!
The Cloisters is an ideal venue for meetings, retreats, quiet days, music rehearsals and smaller events. For more information about hiring the venue or to make a donation, please contact:St Mary’s Church C/O The Church Warden Rosemary Douglas 07342 754 292 or the church office on 01732 822494
